Coed Track
Coach Josh Nething is looking forward to a strong season for his coed team, and said his most outstanding player is senior Eric Shellhorn, who placed sixth in the state in the mile last year, and plans to run track in college.
“He’s got the gift, as we like to say, but he also has the work ethic and the drive and is a great kid to be around,” he said.
Eric’s sister Dana, a sophomore, is also a good cross-country runner and is on the soccer team, he said.
The team had its first scrimmage Saturday, and kicks off the season with a qualifying meet in Montrose on Saturday, which will draw competitors from smaller schools.
Nething said he has 15 seniors competing this year, and said he’s looking forward to watching senior Michelle Owen compete in the long jump and triple jump, where she holds the school record. He’s also expecting great things from sophomore Tess Skoe, a member of the 4x800 relay team and holder of the school record in distance running.
Girls Soccer
The Montrose High girls soccer team got on a bus Friday headed for Colorado Springs for their first tournament against Air Force Academy High, which coach Jamie Gurule said will be “a true test for us.”
Gurule said the girls have been working hard since tryouts, and are a pretty solid bunch. He said the team “looked ready” at a scrimmage against five other schools on Sunset Mesa in Montrose last week and he’s looking forward to a strong season.
The team lost five seniors from last year, but has six seniors this year and 12 team members with varsity experience of the 27-member team.
Girls Tennis
After sending five players to state competition, the girls tennis team at MHS lost seven varsity players to graduation last year, said Coach Jim Aragon, but the team looks strong for this year.
Even with a young team, the girls won their first match against Hotchkiss 4-2 last week, but didn’t finish the last match because of darkness. The next match will be in Montrose against Cedaredge.
Regional competition will be in Grand Junction on May 6-7, with state competition the following weekend in Pueblo.
Twenty-one girls are on the tennis team, with five seniors: Sabrina Norwood, Maranda Ryser, Reina Galvan, Kellie Sheehan and Ashley Laboto.
Only three starters are returning from last year, Aragon said, but some players, like Norwood, are just naturals.
“Sabrina had never touched a racket before last year and went to regionals, and then she and her partner went to state,” he said.
Boys Baseball
Baseball coach Landon Wareham has high hopes for this season, especially since his team won their league last year, but were kept out of the Final 4 by a squeaker loss of 5-4.
The team lost six starters as well, but three starters, seniors Bryce Gaber, Roland McLaren and Mason Robertson, will make a strong showing, and Wareham hopes to at least take league again.
“I think we will be toward the top,” he said.
The team played its first tournament this week in Bloomfield N.M. Wareham said he believes his team “should be pretty solid” even though they’re playing in “a really tough league.”
