Herbst came to Colorado in the 1960s, and graduated from Ft. Lewis College with a degree in mathematics. In his early days, he was an avid skier, and served on ski patrol at Purgatory Ski Area.
He moved to Telluride in the early 70s and worked as a designer and for several architectural firms. He was self-taught and an accomplished artist, planner and designer. His many home designs in the Telluride area are a testament to his talent.
Tony was residing in a Cortez motel so he could be close to the hospital in Cortez, where he was receiving treatment. He was found early Sunday morning by his longtime companion, Veronica “Ronnie” Webster, of Dolores.
Tony was a favorite man-about-town and a consummate joke and storyteller. He was fluent in Spanish, and loved to tell jokes in Spanish to his Spanish-speaking friends.
He is survived by four brothers – Greg, Steve, Chris and Jeff Koppe.
Friends are invited to a celebration of his life Thursday, Aug. 23, at the Telluride Elks Lodge, 5:30-8:30 p.m.
