"We thought Dia de los Muertos would be a great way to include the many different cultures of our community," said Jennifer Heflin, Ah Haa's marketing director. "We will decorate Ah Haa with the bright colors that represent the holiday and we will offer traditional Mexican food and cake."
In addition to delicious eats, there will be free workshops from 4 to 7 p.m., which include making paper marigold flowers to help spirits find their way home. Participants can also create their own personalized flags to adorn altars or other spiritual spaces, paint a skeleton, decorate a mask and help decorate a mural. Inspired by the Mexican mural tradition and the holiday itself, Craig Wasserman of the Mountain School will outline the mural's composition, so everyone who comes to the celebration can make his or her mark.
Other group projects include constructing an altar to welcome loved ones home.
"These are traditionally quite festive – decorated with flowers, candles and happy photos of persons who have passed," said Heflin. "We will be decorating the altar during the day on November 2 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and community members are welcome to bring photos or Dia de los Muertos art by during the day to commemorate loved ones."
A final treat of the evening is the announcement of the Youth Art Award winners, who will receive free Ah Haa classes, framing and other prizes for their accomplishments.
"We've received tons of applicants for this year's youth art awards and have almost narrowed it down to a few outstanding candidates," said Heflin. "We want to thank all of our dedicated young artists for participating."
