Families Lived Close By in South Montrose County MONTROSE — The murder/suicide victims who died Friday morning in rural Montrose County were related by marriage, according to the Montrose County Sheriff’s office.

Sheriff’s spokesman Bobbie McCoid said that one victim, Jeanne Mennell, 84, was the mother-in-law of the other victim, 61-year-old Mark Koeman.

Mennell lived at 20377 Pahgre Road, where the deaths occurred at approximately 9:15 a.m. on July 23, and Koeman lived at 20433 Pahgre Road.

Autopsies conducted by Montrose county coroner Dr. Thomas Canfield show that Mennell died of “asphyxia secondary to smothering” and was ruled a homicide. Koeman’s cause of death was “a single intraoral gunshot wound to the head,” and was ruled a suicide, Canfield reported.

A neighbor who lived down the road said the families had lived on the adjoining properties for many years, but he didn’t know them well. Another neighbor refused to comment. The Montrose Sheriff’s Department log for July 23 reports that deputies responded to the report of shots fired in the 20300 block of Pahgre Road at 9:17 a.m.
